Speaker from SURVIVAL INTERNATIONAL

Our traveling exhibition wants to celebrate cultural diversity. We want to offer to schools and to a
broader public the possibility to personally get to know Amazonia, an Unesco world heritage site with
the greatest biodiversity on our planet.

You can directly experience this through pictures, videos, films, seminars, photo exhibits and cartoons,
story telling, and through the presence of important native masters.

How well do we know the Amazon and its inhabitants, guardians of ancient wisdom, whose culture is now threatened by extinction?

The Amazon awakens in us the primal notion that there is a world that is „still untouched as in the morning of creation“. However, the land, the indigenous people and their knowledge are under threat of extinction. We want to celebrate their existence by exploring the cultural and natural heritage of this
region that has the greatest biodiversity in the world: through film, audio-visual presentations, workshops, seminars, photographic exhibitions and exchange of experiences – all in the presence of natives from the Xavante and Krenak tribes.
At the core of the project is the ancient knowledge of the “earthly guardians”.

We want to raise awareness of their cultural heritage, but also the problems that affect this often forgotten part of the planet.
Through various mediums, the public will become acquainted with an extraordinary ecosystem in which man lives in a sort of mystic union with fauna and flora. We will explore the symbiotic relationship with nature, while showing how traditions are passed on through song, dance, religious beliefs and healing with the pharmacopoeia of the rain forest.

MARIO JURUNA

JURUNA CAM DEPUTADOS

Mario Juruna, the startling voice of the indigenous peoples, has denounced the genocide and indifference of those responsible for threatening these cultures.

Film "JURURA, O ESPIRITO DA FLORESTA"

The film tells the story of Mario Juruna, the only Indio who had a seat in the Brazilian Parliament. His son Diogo Amhó searches for relatives of his father, and with their help, they create a stunning picture of the drama within this complex world of the indigenous peoples. Juruna serves as an example for the
whole range of resistance and survival that indigenous societies face in the advance of so-called civilization.

Dr. CARLOS ANTONIO SOARES PINTO

Born in São Paulo, PhD. in Sociology, Founder of Save the Forest and the Rainforest Academy, 1994.
The Atlantic Rainforest was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1992. Seen biologically, this area consists of a variety of different ecosystems. The richness of species in the Mata Atlântica is remarkable, even exceeding the biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest. Due to the different altitudes and latitude, there is great diversity in flora and fauna. It is thought that there are over 1.5 million different species, many of which are found only in the Atlantic Rainforest.
Salve Foresta (Save the Forest) is a German-Brazilian organization that, alongside the indigenous
people, is working to save the Rainforest.
The main goal of the association is to „promote projects that restore a symbiosis between human
culture and nature“. We can only save the forest if we help the people who live there…

Organisation of the photo exhibit "Amerindios" by
The project AMERINDIOS OF BRAZIL by Renato Soares is a documentation about the manifold ethnic groups in Brazil who are a tremendous enrichment for the country. So far 305 ethnic groups with 274 languages have survived. Thanks to Renato's journey which he started in 1986, it was possible to set up
a photo archive of 60.000 images that depict the rich socio-cultural mosaic of Brazil.
The exhibit consists of fifty photographs depicting more than 60 ethnic groups.

Brazil is experiencing a severe economic and moral crisis

Today, focusing on and talking about indigenous peoples is topical and important. The eradication of these natives began centuries ago with their conquest in the name of „progress“ and it still has not ended. Just think of the five million inhabitants who lived in Brazil before the Portuguese arrived.
Today there are only around 700,000.
With this initiative, we want to focus on the wisdom of these ancient peoples and the breathtaking beauty of their land, where they live in symbiosis with a rich ecosystem.
The destruction and disappearance of the people and their world affects all mankind.
In the past 500 years, the native inhabitants of Brazil have had to see how the fertile soil of theirplantations, hunting and fishing areas as well as their holy and sacred tombs have been transformed into agricultural enterprises or monocultures. With this change have come disease, depression, alcoholism and suicide.
The natives have always suffered racism, discrimination and genocide in the name of civilization. It is a continuing war between the natives and the current „owners“ of the land, who do not want to restore the dignity and justice to the original inhabitants.
Among the roughly 250 groups of Indios living in Brazil and at risk, we remember Enawenênawê of Mato Grosso, threatened by a project of seventy-seven dams; the Kaipo of Xingu, victims of the Belomonte project: the Yanomami of Roraima were slaughtered in order to steal the land and died from mercury poisoning from gold prospectors:, the Awá from Maranhao were driven out by bulldozers and chainsaws: die Uru Eu Wauwau massively threatened by farmers.
Although the territorial rights of the tribes were officially recognized in 1991 and the United Nations adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples on 13 September 2007, these rights are not respected due to corruption, economic interests, inertia and lack of political will.
According to Francesca Casella, Director of Survival Italia, public opinion on this subject is now changing.
And this is our contribution: to show the value and beauty of the Amazon and its people and to highlight the dramatic problems that they are facing. We want to sensitize and inform students, teachers and visitors to this incredible world through our project. It is an opportunity to reflect, through meeting with Brazilian natives. These are prominent personalities, scientists and directors who are working to spread the importance of cultural heritage and biodiversity, which today are more than ever threatened with extinction.
