KEEPINGTOUCH info

Keepingtouch. ‘A Human Chain’.

An international collective action that at the same time reflects and contrasts the current pandemic and lockdown situation.

A video short with a single, multi-faceted theme: the impossible touch. We used the ‘awkward self-consciousness’  of filming yourself deliberately and  the ‘visual fragility’ of the home-made  video to get at the  vulnerability of isolation.

We have put the pandemic experience of distancing under the lens.

In this historical moment when people are concentrated on their individual activities and the human needs of touching and being touched have become a major restriction, Keepingtouch gives everyone – participants and spectators - the opportunity of feeling themselves as a part of a “global touch”. Keepingtouch remembers us that the whole mankind is submitted to the same problems but has also the same needs, no matter what nationality, ethnicity or age.

The common denominator is based on individual emotions in this moment of loneliness and distance. Showing the faces and looks of the participants the sequence offers us a glance on their hearts. This is a message of hope: our neighbors are brought closer encouraging us to a prosperous restart towards normality.

ITALIANO

Du bist eingeladen, an diesem großartigen Projekt teilzunehmen.

ENGLISH

In a time that allows only virtual meetings, three migrant "artists" from countries hard hit by the pandemic came together with an idea. Being away from their respective countries (RONARO ZUIN-LODRON Brazil,  CHRIS CHANNING England and  ANNA CONTI Italy) and sharing the same experience not just of their compatriots but of all people and peoples, they have decided to initiate a global action. They launched the KEEPINGTOUCH video project.
It is something that reflects and contrasts the current situation which demands distance and prevents us from sharing a touch and a ‘live‘ smile.

You are invited to be part of this project.
Your contribution will be a simple video of a few seconds recorded on your mobile phone, without special lights, filters or editing. The value of your contribution will be in your individuality, experience and culture.

The videos will be edited into a large multicultural chain of touches and reactions that will contradict social distancing.

What to do.

The instructions are shown in the cartoon below, and are explained briefly here:

  1. Choose a room/situation to film yourself in and use your phone vertically for recording.
  2. A second person's hand slowly touches you. On the screen we see only their hand and maybe their arm. It can come from any direction (from right or left, for above or below)
  3. Your reaction (or non-reaction) is up to you.
  4. After the person's arm disappears from the screen, you reach out to touch somebody else. To right or left, upwards or downwards … your hand (and arm?) leaves the screen.
N.B. If you are alone in your home, just do 1 and 4, your contribution will still be of great value.

Ready!

Send us the video.

The video can also contain the moment you turn it on and position yourself, as well as when you turn it off. No worries, we ‘ll take care of trimming it.

PORTUGUES

Did you encounter any challenges regarding your project?

Some participants were isolated and didn't have the chance to be touched by someone. Some others had to keep the mask, what hides their expression.
People were very engaged, but sometimes the conditions weren't favorable. However this challenge brought even an additional charme to the production.
Moreover it wasn't easy to direct the participants at distance, and at the same time to give them enough room for their creativity. So we decided to

We are interested in you and your process of creating your short-film. Would you like to send us a testimonial? Your testimonial will be displayed on our platforms and would help us to promote our festival and share the message of unification.

We're three artists from three different countries, all living abroad.
The video was conceived as a way to bring some hope to other people also living abroad by showing their own compatriots who still live in their home country and have their same concerns, and finally people from all over the world.
We started thinking about people's most prosaic needs in this pandemic. Our first idea was to show one thing we come off badly in the current situation: smiling.
In the process of producing the video other needs came out and our idea has changed. We noticed that the touch is a sometimes underestimated human need everybody is missing, and we decided to make it the central point of our project.
And indeed the participants were enthusiastic about it, so we went on with this new idea.

"Keepingtouch" is a wonderful video reflecting all needs of contacting others during nowadays pandemic. Cultures act differently when greeting someone. Some just shake hands, others communicate by avoiding physical distance, expressing their relations to others by embracing or kissing a person. The pandemic asks for a distance between people. For millions this is a great challenge. Many still have to get used to it.

"Keepingtouch" is the outstanding opportunity to overcome the new barriers created by the pandemic and to demonstrate ties to others. It symbolizes that people are not alone promoting new kinds of contact beyond isolation. The participants express their emotional ties to relatives and non-relatives. Taking a look to the video it turns out that closelyness during the pandemic shows the emotions towards others on a global level.  "Keepingtouch" as a movement of global importance owes great support. Join it!
